BIO

As a multi-instrumentalist, I have played with various artists, predominantly as a guitarist, since having moved to Canada from Japan in 2013. The artists include Clerel, Po Lazarus, Ms. Holmes, Vikki Gilmore, Mike McKenna Jr. and many others. My objective as a talented multi-instrumentalist is to help artists realize their vision and to maximize their compositions’ potential by adding just the right amount of playing in the right place of their sonic scape. As well, my multi-instrumentalist skills have been of great use during a variety of recording sessions, having worked with many talented industry names such as sound engineer Mark Vreeken (producer of Tragically Hip, Leonard Cohen) for Po Lazarus, and Howard Bilarman (chief engineer producer at Hotel de Tango studio who worked with Arcade Fire, The Barr Brothers) for Neil Holyoak.I have been producing and mixing various artists since 2010. I mainly work with Protools and it is through my understanding of music, acquired as a musician and through many years of recording sessions, that I have developed my producing and mixing skills. In addition, I have become well acquainted with the process of releasing and distributing music via today’s streaming platforms in order to reach a worldwide audience and build a dedicated fanbase.

PRODUCING

WHAT IS A MUSIC PRODUCER?

A music producer, or record producer, assists an artist with their recording project, bringing their vision to fruition and guiding their sound along the way. Being a music producer is in many ways a strange job. What a producer creates can't be seen. What a producer creates is not even an object. If you zoom all the way out, what a music producer does for a living is this: Vibrate air molecules in such a way that when the air molecules bump up against a human life form, that life form feels something.

WHAT DOES A MUSIC PRODUCER DO?

The role of a music producer has always been a somewhat nebulous one. Increasingly it can mean a number of vastly different things. Is someone who programs a beat a producer? Yes. Is someone who takes calls, coordinates meetings, and gets artists signed to labels a producer? Yes. Is someone who plays bass, co-writes songs, and mediates disputes between band members a producer? Yes.

SCHEDULE AND BUDGET

First, the producer's responsibility is to schedule a recording session within the appointed budget and then lead the musicians through that schedule in an efficient manner. Additionally, they guarantee the successful technical and artistic completion of the project. In many ways, it is the primary reason a music producer is given the job. They have demonstrated by their work that they are a professional, capable of making a successful record and submitting the finished product exactly on the contractually-agreed-upon date. For a larger commercial recording project for a major label or a smaller but well-financed label the completion date is a critical part of a larger schedule. The process includes manufacturing, marketing, and publicity schedules that will coordinate to launch the record's release (or “street date”).In the case of a lower budget, “indie,” or personal project, having an experienced producer oversee completion is a good idea. For example, they can act as a hedge against the artist insisting on further overdubbing, or endless remixing, which is (unfortunately) the cause of many records never coming out. Therefore, a music producer's credo must be “OTOB”: On Time and On Budget.

SHAPING THE MUSIC

This second responsibility revolves around the question of how a producer takes the raw material of an artist's song and transforms it into a finished recording. This function is both artistic and commercial. It must express the artist's musical and emotional intent, but must also reach a broad audience.George Martin opined that the producer is the person “who actually puts the frame around everything, presents it to the public, and says ‘This is what it is.'” It's the producer's taste that makes it what it is.

WHAT IS A RECORDING ENGINEER?

A Recording Engineer s someone who sets up and operates recording equipment and is responsible for creating, modifying and producing music. He or she is an expert in everything audio. This type of work draws on many disciplines like acoustics, psychoacoustics, electrical engineering and music. The equipment a recording engineer typically uses includes digital recorders, listening equipment, mixing boards and sophisticated computer programs and software. The recording engineer must carefully balance art and science, and be able to communicate and understand the artist's needs in order to make their musical dreams a realityRecording engineers are required to work with a large number of musical types and personalities. Patience, listening, dedication and attention to detail are critical personal skills to have in this field. Professional recording engineers must give each of their clients the same amount of care and dedication, regardless of his or her own musical tastes and preferences. Communication skills are also necessary in this field. Recording engineers must be able to communicate effectively with their clients in order to understand what their client wants and how best to make that happen.

WHAT DOES A RECORDING ENGINEER DO?

Using various techniques, a recording engineer will perform a wide range of tasks like noise control, acoustical design, and sound level setting. Depending on their project role, a recording engineer will be called upon to perform tasks on any level, from the basics of microphone placement to the more advanced aspects of sound waves and sound wave integration.Translating analog to digital sound and synchronizing sounds to visual media is also an important aspect of the work of a recording engineer. In the studio, he or she is responsible for not only recording but also editing, mixing and mastering the sound recording. They must also be familiar with design, installation and operation of equipment for sound recording,
reinforcement and broadcasting. Although they should be educated in the overall process of recording, typically a recording engineer will specialize in one or two steps in the total sound recording process.

MIXING

Mixing Engineer Montreal, QC

I always put a lot of attention and love into my mixes. I work closely with my clients to fulfill their vision of their creative work, maximizing each piece's potential. I also work closely with producers, musicians, and other artists to ensure that the final product sounds just right and prepare everything for mastering.Often my process includes adding and customizing special effects, such as reverb, echo, delay, chorus, flange, phasing, pitch shifting, equalization, compression, limiting, etc.I also balancing the volume levels of each element of the audio production, including vocals, drums, guitars, etc., so they don't overpower the others and adjust the pan position of each element so that they do not conflict with each other.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED A PRODUCER OR A MIXING ENGINEER?

A producer is the creative leader of any album or recording. They oversee the recording, mixing, and mastering of tracks, advise musicians on how to play a track, help artists select the songs to record, and more. A mixing engineer does the technical job of blending all the recordings into a finished song.

WHAT IS AUDIO MIXING?

In sound recording and music production, audio mixing is the process in which individual track recordings are combined into a final mono, stereo, multichannel, or surround-sound format. Levels, panning, and effects such as EQ (Equalizer) and compression are put on the tracks to make them sound cohesive.

HOW TO PREPARE

Prepping your song(s) for mixing can be a little bit intimidating. To ease the process, here are few steps to follow to assure a better understanding and easier communication:

Check with the engineer if he has any export preferences
Have all exported tracks start at the same point
Arrange your files: one folder for each song
Provide the BPM, Key and time signature
Include a rough mixdown of each song
Send any reference tracks or ideas for the mix you might have
Print any MIDI tracks you may have to audio
DO NOT send any MIDI tracks except if it is a tempo, key or time signature map for the song
The engineer does not necessarily work on the same DAW as you

WHAT TO PROVIDE

Here is a small checklist of what you should provide to the mixing engineer:

Verify tracks are properly named
Name of the song(s)
Name of the feature artist if applicable
Tempo of the song(s)
Key of the song(s)
Time signature of the song(s)
How to name your tracks:
Simply put the name of the element of the track (Lead Synth, Guitar, Lead Vocal, Background Vocal, etc.)
If there are any changes of tempo, key or time signature, during the song, please provide a map of the changes.
